Today I sat through a shallow film version of a very complex book - The Secret Life of Bees. The acting was just "OK" - nothing to write home about. Dakota Fanning and some of the actors in minor parts gave the most professional performances. The three other "actors" in major roles should stick to singing. The casting was awful. With another cast of more seasoned actors and a better script, this could have been a winner. The book was a huge hit and book club favorite. The audience was polite but unmoved by the performances and lackluster script.
Save your money and rent it.

How disappointing to hear this. However, not every movie that features black actors needs to be a blockbusting box office hit, when there are plenty of B movies produced with white actors. Still, I think that for many little black girls it is just good to see beautiful black women on silver screen.
I agree on the face time value to little girls. But this big girl wanted more. After half a century of watching movies, my threshold for quality is a bit high. We should go beyond pretty black faces and demand talented actors.
